Arthur W. Meyer


Arthur W. Meyer, 76, retired Band Director for the Atlantic school system, passed away Nov. 11, 2005, at his home in Atlantic after a courageous three year battle with cancer.

Art served as the band director in Atlantic for 26 years, from 1955-1981. He remains the longest tenured band director at Atlantic High School. Art built the program to level of respect it enjoys today. Of the many traditions and events Art started at AHS, one of the most widely-recognized is the annual Spagheti Supper. This once a year fund raiser is the only fund raiser put on by the AHS Bands, and regualrly brings in over $10,000 each year for their trip.

Art remained active in the community with music, participating in many organizations, including the Cass County Community Band.

Art was survived by his wife, Joanne of Atlantic; one daughter, Greta and her husband Terry Anderson of Ankeny; two sons, Greg and his wife Wendy Meyer of Oskaloosa, and Grant and his wife Brenda Meyer of Laramie, Wyo.; grandchildren, Tiffany, Nathan and Ashley Meyer and Benjamin Anderson; brothers, Cloy and his wife Bonnie Meyer and Duane Meyer both of Castialia; one sister, Marlys and her husband Jerry Hager of Castalia; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Art in death were his father Harold, his natural mother Mabel, who died when Art was 8 days old, his stepmother Elsie, a sister-in-law Doris and her husband Clifford Klein and a brother-in-law Donald and his wife Juanita Ahrenholtz.
