Fall Meeting
September 8. 2003

Meeting was called to order by Dan Schoening at 7:10 p.m.
Introductions were made.
Minutes were read and approved.
Treasurers report was read and approved.
The following committee reports were given:
Elementary Affairs: none
Middle School Affairs: none
Concert Band Affairs: Dave Clark. Meets later this month. Focus of the
year is possible solo/ensemble changes coming. Dave will keep us posted.
Marching Band Affairs: Mike Peters. Still working on new ballots.
SW HS Honor Band: Stacy Lendt. Dec. 13 auditions in Red Oak. Jan 19 festival
date. Oct. 31 is thre registration deadline. Rod Chestnut is the 11-12 director.
9-10 is yet to be decided. Be sure to sign up to help judge. The shuttle system
that was used for lunch last year will be used again and expanded to include
the dinner hour.
SW MS Honor Band: Patti Bekkerus -Nov. 1 auditions in Clarninda. Nov.
14 festival @ Lewis Central. 7th director is Dan Schoening. 8th director is
Randy Atkinson. Oct. 3 is the registration deadline. Oboe requirements for 7th
grade oboe will be emailed out soon. Please sign up to help judge.
SWIHMB: Dave Clark. New Asst. Director is Jeff Schoening. An explanation
of its purpose was made. Auditoiins are in May this year and the trip
is next year. Displays will be at all district events this year. There are 3
openings on the director board: tpt, tuba and percussion.
College Affairs: Al Sergal retires this year from Nortwest Missouri.
Hes been a good support to our Iowa programs.
Mentorship: Joe Tacket. Welcome to all of our new directors.
R&D: Nate Simons. A survey was handed out. Return it to Nate. For
those not at the meeting it will be available on-line.
Jazz Affairs: Terry Hanzlik. Registrations for contest were available
at the meeting. Class 3A performs at IWCC this year. Give jedges name ideas
to Terry.
Major Landers: Byron Tinder-Scholarships are available for a senior,
going to an Iowa college and majoring in music education. Auditions for this
take place at the SWIBA honor band in January.
Public Relations: Ruben Newell. Dates were added to the calendar. Be
sure to get program info to Ruben for the IBA magazine. Let Ruben know of anything
you want on the website and check it often. It contains a lot of useful info.
Student Affairs: Eric, Jeremy and David will work on finding a candidate.
Presidents report: IBA conference in May, make plans now to attend. Show
your administration its value. Its May 13-15
Stay on top of deadlines for registrations.
IBA & SWIBA dues must be paid to participate in honor bands.
If youre retiring or have 30+years of teaching let Dan know.
Old Business
Commissioned piece: It was moved by Pete Jacobus, 2nd by Byron Tinder
to commission a piece for the 9-10 honor band and have that composer conduct
the 9-10 band, up to $2500 was aproved. Motion carried. Several area and Iowa
composers were discussed as good options to do this. Pete Jacobus moved, Tracy
Ryan 2nd to select Gavin Lendt as our composer and conductor. If he cant,
the honor band chair will come up with plan B.
New teacher to district scholarship for IBA: tabled until the winter
meeting. Basically NWIBA provides $200 to first year directors to their district
to help cover expenses of attending IBA. Tracie will contact NWIBA to get more
information about their program.
Calendar of Events: Handed out. Check the website too.
IAAE SWIBA will send them a $250 donation. moved by Dave Clark 2nd by
Carol Cason. Approved
New Business
Endowment Fund: Gaylin gave us an update. The purpose is to manage IBA
funds that arent needed in the general fund. This will be Gaylins
last year if someone else would be interested in taking over.
Term Changes: term dates were set by IBA. They are listed on the 9-8-03
agenda.
IBA Pres. Elect-Jeff Schoening moved, Pete Jacobus 2nd Patti Bekkerus
as our nominee. Approved.

Studnet Affairs. IWCC and SWCC will work to fill this position.

Check into Major Landers scholarship amounts for other districts
SWCC starts its concert band season on Sept 11. Come join if you can.
Itd be nice to have clinics at the honor band days again.
We need to remember to hire a professional sound operator for the jazz festival.
The jazz schedule needs to be set to ensure that all classes rotate to perform
at IWCC
