SOUTHWEST IOWA BANDMASTER
Fall Meeting
September 12. 2005

Meeting was called to order by Pam Ryan at 7:03 p.m.
Introductions were made.
Minutes were read.
Treasurers report was read.
The following committee reports were given:
- Elementary Affairs: Sue Schneider.
Nothing new.
- Middle School Affairs: Pam Ryan. Share any honor band concerns with
Pam. 8th Grade All Iowa Honor Band will be the same
format next year.
- Concert Band Affairs: Craig Crilly. They will meet again at
all-state
- Marching Band Affairs: Mike Peters. none
- SW HS Honor Band: Kim Smith. Auditions Dec. 10, festival Jan 16 in
Red Oak. Forms due Oct. 28. 9-10 director will be
Karl Kling. 11-12 Director will be Travis Cross.
- SW MS Honor Band: Patti Bekkerus. 7th director Pam Ryan, 8th Steve
Colton, Marion. Forms due Sept. 30. Auditions in
Clarinda, festival in Atlantic.
- SWIHMB: Jeff Schoening/Gaylin Sudik. Byron Tinder is the
assistant director. There are some openings on the
board, applications and information will be emailed
out later. There is discussion on other possible sites
other than the Fiesta Bowl. Gaylin gave a history of
the group. See Jeff or Gaylin if you have specific questions
about the groups organization.
- College Affairs: Eric Johnson. Fill position later.
- Mentorship: Lee Nelson. 1st or 2nd year teachers please meet up
with Lee. Shared a hand out of teaching tips. Oct.
29th 1st/2nd year teacher clinic in Ames.
- R&D: Desmond Armentrout. nothing
- Jazz Affairs: Steve Britt -IA Jazz Championships will be April
18. Had information available about upcoming jazz
clinics/events.
- Major Landers: Byron Tinder. Encourage seniors to audition.
Contact Byron for
information. $500,$300,$100 amounts.
- Public Relations: Ruben Newell. Keep checking the website for
updated info. Contact him if you want anything
added. Give him email updates. Give him etude
recordings and he’ll post them......all-state, ms, or hs.
- Student Affairs: Still need to fill this.
- Endowment: Chuck Tuetsche. none
- Presidents report: A written report was attached to the agenda. Be
sure to turn information in for the IBA magazine.
Oct. 26 is the reading clinic.
Old Business
- Calendar Discussion on deadlines being met for honor band
entries.
- Attire for HS Honor Band...it had been voted and approved to wear the
school marching uniform at the winter meeting.
- College Affairs Christine Hitt will take over contigent upon her
acceptance of the position
- Student Affairs Pam can appoint a student who will serve in this
roll.
- Commissioned piece Moved by Ruben, 2nd by Tom to allow Kim and
committee up to $4,000 for our 2008 HS Honor Band to
secure a composer/director.
New Business
- IAAE Larry Brandstedder shared lots of information. Check out
www.smartz.org. Email Larry about information for the SAI
outstanding administration or school board application. It
was moved by Ruben 2nd by Dan to donate $300 to IAAE,
amended motion to $500 and approved.
- Karl King Active Nominee--Pete Jacobus
- Karl King Retired Nominee--Lee Nelson
- Hall of Fame Deceased--None
- IBA President Elect--None
- IBA Secretary--SWIBA supports Steve Cook
- Approved the contribution of $100 to IBA for the IBA Banquet.
- Moved to raise our honor band director fees by $100, approved.
- Get John directory info. and and honor band updates you can.
- Place of winter meeting discussed. Pam will try for the Main St. in
Atlantic.
- Discussion on string, acoustic bass in honor band auditions. Yes
they can, the student’s directors responsible for part
transposing. Accept maximum of two.
- If a SWIBA member is honored at IBA Banquet, SWIBA will pay for
their meal ticket.
- Discussion on a payment to chairs/hosts of events, tabled
until
winter,
