Spring Meeting
May 16, 2003
Hotel Ft. Des Moines, Des Moines, Iowa
Meeting was called to order by Deb Jepsen at 12:15 p.m.
Minutes were read and approved.
Treasurers report was read and approved.
The following committee reports were given:
- Elementary Affairs: Paul Tallman via Deb Jepson. Lisa Lang gave a report about a link on the IBA website where you can put in your favorite elem. repertoire.
- Middle School Affairs: Paul Jepson-All Iowa band was an outstanding ensemble this year. Mr. Saucedo worked extremely well with the kids. The commissioned piece will be published by hal Leonard next year. Mark Williams will be next years director. A big thanks to Paul for his time as our representative.
- Concert Band Affairs: Marty Aldrich--Marty has been great on this committee, especially working through the required list. Thank you to Marty for his time as our representative.
- Marching Band Affairs: Jay Williams via Mike Peters-They are postponing the vote on the new ballots to review some areas further.
- SW HS Honor Band: John McGilligan-corresponding dates for next year. 11-12 director will be Rod Chestnut.
- SW MS Honor Band: Patti Bekkerus -auditions will be in Clarinda. Festival at Lewis Central. There is a 3 year rotation for this from L.C. to Creston to Atlantic.
- SWIHMB: John McGilligan-there will be a board meeting in the summer. Discussion on the set up of the group, purpose, philosophy, etc.
- College Affairs: Eric Johnson-none at this time.
- Mentorship: Joe Tacket-thanks to Perry Bekkerus’ work to join forces on music mentorship. Let Joe know of new director in our area. Be sure to contact people early to offer support.
- R&D: Nate Simons-There is a rough dreaft of the survey done on “attitudes and job satisfaction of Iowa Band Directors.”
- Jazz Affairs: Terry Hanzlik/Dave Clark-nothing new at this time. Feb. 21 is next years date.
- Major Landers: Byron Tinder-best of luck to Harlan Muir in auditions.
- Public Relations: Kevin Johnson-he thanked us for getting program information in. The website has been transferred to Ruben. Thanks to Kevin for his time as our representative.
- Student Affairs: no one currently. We need Jeremy and Eric to help get someone.
- Presidents report: Deb has appreciated her time in our organization. Thanks to her for her service in our district.
New Business
- Offices: Dan Schoening is next year’s president.
Pres. - elect -Stacey Lendt nominated by John McGilligan 2nd by Pete Jacobus. Craig Crilly nominated by Dave Clark 2nd by Mike Peters. Craig Crilly will be president elect.
Elem. Affairs - Sue Schneider nominated by Tracie 2nd by Mike. Approved.
M.S. Affairs - Pam Ryan nominated by Dave C. 2nd by Jeff Schoening. Approved.
Concert band affairs - Dave Clark nominated by Pete 2nd by Doug. Approved.
Marching band affairs - Mike Peters nominated by Pete 2nd by Craig.Approved.
Jazz Band affairs - Terry Hanzlik.
H.S. Honor band chair - Stacey Lendt.
Student Affairs - we will ask Jeremy and Eric to get us names.
- Calendar of events handed out for next year.
- Committee terms will be 3 year terms set by a matrix coming from IBA to eliminate several people leaving a committee on the same year.
- Discussion on a new teacher to the district scholarship to attend IBA. The district would provide $200 towards the cost of attending IBA. NWIBA currently does something like this. Tabled until fall.
- Craig Crilly brought up the outstanding performance for small gorup contest. There is a low attendance at the concerts. Discussions on ways to improve the attendance.
- Tracie brought up commissioning a piece for either the h.s. or m.s. honr band next year. An average price from a couple of composers connected to SWIBA would be $2,000. Tabled until next fall.
