Spring Meeting
MAY 12. 2006

Meeting was called to order by Pam Ryan at 12:06 p.m.
Introduced our Major Landers candidate, Emily Cox from L.C. who plays
clarinet. Good luck to her today.
Presented IBA banquet tickets to Ragene Darling, Tracy Ryan and Pete Jacobus
for 30+ years of teaching.
Minutes were read and approved
Treasurers report was read and approved
The following committee reports were given:
- Elementary Affairs: Sue Schneider. They meet at 3:15 today. There
is discussion over 7th grade bands not being in the beginner
class for honor band selection even though some
districts start in 7th grade.
- Middle School Affairs: Pam Ryan. Steve Melillo will be next year’s
director. All went well this year. There was discussion over
all being the same music for the band.
- Concert Band Affairs: Craig Crilly. They meet at 3:15 today.
There is a push to get more Grade 2 music on the list. Hope to get
a link for recordings of pieces on the IBA site. Large Group
clinician setting, discussion over hiring a clinician to be at Large Group.
Think about signing up to be an adjudicator. They are
discussing scheduling small group differently, by region rather
than size. Discussion over too large of a band for the all-state
festival. Academic elegibility issue was discussed. In order to
participate in any competition students must be passing all
classes. More on that coming soon. Terry Hanzlik encouraged
more kids to be auditioning for all-state and to eliminate scratches.
- Marching Band Affairs: Mike Peters Local sites will be responsible
for video taping their own contests now. If you know of any
concerns as to why schools don’t do state MB contest, please
share with Mike.
- SW HS Honor Band: Kim Smith. Requirements will be out in June.
Give Kim ideas for directors. Discussion over sting bass
audition materials.
- SW MS Honor Band: Patti Bekkerus. Dates are on the calendar.
Auditions in Clarinda, festival in L.C.
- SWIHMB:Jeff Schoening. Auditions are May 20. Flag ballot will be
avialable online. See Jeff if interested in being on the board
of directors for open positions.
- College Affairs: Christine Hitt. The student membership drive
is really progressing.
- Mentorship: Lee Nelson. IBAARD is going strong. The grant has
been wonderful to get the “old guys” out to visit the “new
guys”.
- R&D: Desmond Armentrout. Meet at 3:15 today.
- Jazz Affairs: Steve Britt . All-state jazz band, encourage your
kids to be a part of the audition process. Steve Lawson
festival is in january this year. Districct Jazz festival is at
IWCC this year, much discussion over the possibility of changing dates and
moving it to Harlan this year. Moved by Pete Jacobus , 2nd by
Tracy Ryan to leave at the same corresponding date at IWCC.
Approved.
- Major Landers: Byron Tinder. He encouraged everyone to get
their seniors to audition next year.
- Public Relations: Ruben Newell. Shared the annual email award
counts.
- Student Affairs: Keith Schoening. Nothing new.
- Endowment: Chuck Tuetsche. They meet this afternoon. Interst
rates are up so that’s good news. There will be a risk
contigency fund started.
- Presidents report: Attached. We are encouraged to attend Judy
Jeffries Educator Ethics clinic. Consider nominating someone
for the Administrators Award . Send Cheryl Crandell and
nostalgia items you might have lying around.
Old Business
- The sight reading clinic might change dates to
avoid some inservice conflicts. Still will be in
Stanton.
- Much discussion over the idea of compensating some
chairperson positions and host schools. It was
moved by Tracie and 2nd by Pete to keep the
chairpersons and host schools as is with no monitary
compensation. Approved.
New Business

- Pam Ryan for Middle School Affairs
- Christine Hitt for College Affairs
- Ruben Newell for President Elect
- Bob Hoffman for Secretary/Treasurer
