SOUTHWEST IOWA BANDMASTER
Winter Meeting
March 3, 2003
Main Street Grill, Atlantic,
Iowa
Meeting was called to order by Deb
Jepsen at 6:50 p.m.
Introductions were made.
Minutes from the fall meeting were
read and approved.
Treasurers report was read and
approved.
The following committee reports
were given:
Elementary Affairs: Paul Tallman --
no new report.
Middle School Affairs: Paul Jepson
-- Saucedo will be the director for the 8th grade All-Iowa honor band. Final information for this will be sent
out soon.
Concert Band Affairs: Marty
Aldrich -- Be aware of deadlines.
Don’t forget the required piece for large group.
Marching Band Affairs: Jay
Williams -- none
SW HS Honor Band: John McGilligan -- great bands and
directors this year. Red Oak was a
terrific host. Had 92 in the 9-10
band and 90 in the 11-12 band. There
were 297 9-10 auditions and 205 11-12 auditions. We had a 40% scratch rate, this is a concern. Give feed back to John about the
recording company. Should this
concert start at 7:00?
Give clinic ideas to John for next
year. The shuttle system for lunch
was a great success, could it be expanded to include supper next year.
SW MS Honor Band: Patti Bekkerus -- none.
SWIHMB: John McGilligan -- it was
a very successful trip and band.
We have already received our invitation to go back in two years if we
wish.
College Affairs: Eric Johnson -- IWCC
has reserved dates to host the jazz festival again next year tentatively. Keep encouraging those music education majors. Discussion on the direction of school
administrators and our music programs.
Mentorship: Joe Tacket -- handed
out a list of last years new positions and mentors.
R&D: Nate Simons -- they are
starting a report on teacher retention.
It’s in the rough draft stage. Reminder that if you have seniors interested in pursuing a
music, IBA will send them the magazine for free for a year.
Jazz Affairs: Terry Hanzlik/Dave
Clark -- financial report was handed out.
Discussion over this years festival was held. Would there be interest in a one-day jazz clinic on a
Saturday in September?
Major Landers: Byron Tinder -- Harlan
Muir from A-L (saxophone) will be our representative at IBA this year. Be sure to hear their performances.
Public Relations: Kevin Johnson --
discussion on usefulness of election flyers. It seems redundant with the great magazine coverage that
already exists.
Student Affairs: no one currently.
Presidents report: none.
Jazz Festival: Date will be set
by the chairpersons.
Petition: Manning will be
petitioning to join SWIBA next year.
PR/Web: Nominations for this
position Ruben Newell, Dave Clark moved, Lisa Tackett 2nd; Nate
Simons, Eric Johnson moved John McGilligan 2nd. Ruben will be the new PR/Web master. Thanks to Kevin Johnson for bringing
this area so far and making so many improvements for our district.
Flyers: Paul Tallman moved, Dave
Clark 2nd that we discontinue sending out the mailings for our candidates.
Motion carried. We would like to look into the possibility
of putting the flyer information out over the web site or maybe email.
IBA: This years dates are
May15-17. It was moved and
approved to donate $100 to IBA to offset their banquet expense if we are
asked. If you would be interested
in helping at the registration table contact Jay Nugent.
Jeremy Fox at Creston has
revitalized the Creston Comm. Band.
Their concert is Aril 6. Glad
to know that tradition is coming back.
The Cass Community Band is starting up again in Atlantic. If you’d be interested in joining
them contact Ruben Newell or Tracie Hawley.
Meeting Adjourned at 8:18 p.m.
Respectfully,
Tracie Hawley
SWIBA secretary/treasurer
