SOUTHWEST IOWA BANDMASTER
Winter Meeting
MARCH 6. 2006
The Pines, Atlantic, Iowa
Meeting was called to order by Pam Ryan at 6:25 p.m.
Minutes were read and approved
Treasurers report was read and approved
The following committee reports were given:
- Elementary Affairs: Sue Schneider. They will have a session
sponsored at IBA.
- Middle School Affairs: Pam Ryan. The commissioned piece will be
going out soon.
- Concert Band Affairs: Craig Crilly. Nothing new.
- Marching Band Affairs: Mike Peters via email we are currently
collecting the data from the survey that was sent out
electronically to the IBA membership last semester to determine
why we have such a low turnout to State Marching Contest compared to the
other State events. Once these results are gathered we are going to meet
to see if some of these problems can be address in a large
session at the Convention with us and Allan. Currently State
Marching Contest is by far the lowest (percentage wise) attended of
all the State Music events. I have not heard how many directors actually
filled out the survey. The Heartland Colorguard Association is
trying to get more Iowa groups involved in their contests. They
hold both winterguard and Indoor marching percussion contests. It
really is a wonderful organization and a great way to get your kids to work
on their skills for marching band throughout the winter months. It anybody
has any questions they can call or e-mail me and I would be
happy to get them the information they need.
- SW HS Honor Band: Kim Smith. Travis Cross had many good comments
about the band. 2008 will be Andy Boysen Jr. Thanks to Red
Oak for hosting. Give Kim recommendations for
directors. She has archive recordings from 2000 to present if you
wish to borrow them.
- SW MS Honor Band: Patti Bekkerus. Very successful day this year.
Thanks to Atlantic for hosting. Patti is looking into using a
new percussion etude book. String bass auditions will be more
defined next fall. John Hewitt will be the 7th director. Give her
suggestions for an 8th grade director.
- SWIHMB:Jeff Schoening. Be sure to get all forms into Jeff. The trip
price is estimated at $1235. That is without game tickets. He
will give out the website address where you can go to look up
the itinerary and such. Thanks to Moore music for again supplying the
percussion line and also for the new addition of sousaphones for the
band. If your school is interested in purchasing any of
these instruments contact Chuck. Rhonda Taggert is working with
us to see about grant writing for this group to help off set the cost per
student.
- College Affairs: Christine Hitt. None.
- Mentorship: Lee Nelson. Utilize the website for resources.
Don’t be afraid to call directors and even composters to get
answers. There is a $32,000 grant to pay IBAARD directors to go
out and work with new directors.
- R&D: Desmond Armentrout. Nothing new.
- Jazz Affairs: Steve Britt . IWCC will be next year’s site.
